John Gower Design is an architectural design practice based in Courtenay, BC. Since 1990, John has brought a “relationship based” approach to his work, considering the unique opportunities of each site while responding to the distinctive needs and desires of each client. Spanning North America and beyond, his projects vary in size from tiny cabins and home renovations to large custom homes and commercial design.
John has a particular interest in using sustainable home design to create enduring and beautiful homes that live lightly on the earth. To this end, John has completed Passive House training, and continues to develop his proficiency in integrating innovative building components such as SIPs, renewable energy technologies and permaculture principles into affordable house designs.
John lives with his family in a co-housing community, where he continues to investigate good design as a way to create connections between neighbors and support a high quality of life. His practice has grown to include site planning and design for other developing co-housing communities on Vancouver Island.
