Insulspan received honors in multiple categories during the 2021 Structural Insulated Panel Association’s virtual ceremony.
Both projects used SIPs to create a tight building envelope to meet their net-zero energy or net-zero energy ready goals.
Insulspan won top honors for Excellence in Home Design in the Panelized Home less than 2,000 sq. ft. category for the “Staff Float Homes” project. This 2021 Jerry Rouleau Award was presented by the National Association of Home Builders’ Building Systems Councils.
Insulspan is pleased to announce that it was the recipient of six awards at the SIPA Annual Conference this year. The categories varied and the winning projects spanned both Canada and the US.

This year’s awards acknowledge Insulspan’s expertise in a variety of construction types and reaffirms our philosophy that quality and a high level of service is what makes us the industry leader in SIPs.
This year marks the 17th year of SIPA’s annual awards and, once again, Insulspan earned recognition. Insulspan SIPs were the product of choice for PanelWrights in the company’s award winning, hybrid, timber frame residence. The West Virginia homeowners’ goal of energy independence was achieved using Insulspan structural insulated panels in conjunction with passive solar design, right-sized HVAC, and more.
SIPA (Structural Insulated Panel Association) counts both PanelWrights and Insulspan as long-time members. With a HERS Index of 48, it is no surprise that the residence earned Energy Star certification.
A 2014 Canadian program from Sustainable Architecture & Building magazine and the Canada Green Building Council awarded an Insulspan project a Canadian Green Building Award. The award for exemplary sustainably designed buildings in Canada went to a North Vancouver project. The Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) Store used Insulspan Structural Insulating Panels (SIPs) in the construction of its walls and roof. Other sustainable design considerations were also included.
The judges for the national award commented about the structure, “A beautiful building with impressive performance – as a retail facility that needs to attract and engage customers. The site development and integration with the park is carefully considered. MEC raises the bar every time it develops a new store.”
Insulspan SIPs made the store’s unique design possible. The SIPs also comprise the thermal envelope and sustainable attributes that continue to be an important consideration within the MEC organization. Read more about this project
Structural Insulating Panel System manufacturer, Insulspan, received a 2011 national home building accolade with its Lakeside Green Cottage, capturing First Place in Green Building using SIPs.
“This year’s award winners like Insulspan, prove that despite a sluggish housing market, the systems-built industry is raising the bar in residential marketing and home design concepts,” said BSC Chairman Vic DePhillips, a modular manufacturer from Moosic, Pa. “Our award winners are adding credibility to their businesses and shedding a positive light on the building systems industry as a whole.”
The BSC Excellence in Home Design and Marketing Awards program is presented by the Building Systems Councils (BSC) of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The NAHB is a trade association that represents the concrete, log, modular, and panelized building system industries at their annual awards program.
Insulspan received the 2010 Excellence in Home Design Award in the Green Panelized Home category. The Building Systems Councils (BSC) Excellence in Home Design and Marketing Awards program is an annual tradition.
This award was received for the Blunk residence in Batavia, IL., a project that used Insulspan SIPS, Advantage ICFs and Plastispan under-slab insulation. Together, these products created the tight building envelope required to achieve a “one-watt house.” A one-watt home uses only one watt of energy for every finished square foot.
The Blunk home found inspiration in the “passive house” movement. Passive house refers to homes that are so highly energy efficient that there is no need for conventional heating systems. The Insulspan SIP walls and roof provided crucial components in achieving this home’s level of energy efficiency. Read more about this project
The Building Systems Councils (BSC) is an arm of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). These awards are in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Judging was by a panel of industry experts.
Insulspan received the SIPA Building Excellence Award for institutional, industrial, and commercial structures for its Cherokee Nation Central School project. Located in Cherokee, N.C., the project was also the overall contest winner in a field that included agricultural, multi-family residential, institutional, industrial, and commercial buildings.
The Cherokee Nation Central School project included more than a dozen buildings. Combined, these buildings totaled nearly 500,000 square-feet of space. Additionally, the project was built to LEED® standards. Once certified it will be the largest LEED®-certified school project east of the Mississippi River. Learn more about this project
The awards are an annual tradition of the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA).
Insulspan received the Building Excellence Award at the 7th Annual SIPA Awards. The 2009 winning project, the Illinois located Blunk Residence, is a multiple award winner. Written accolades for this particular award included, “An impressive energy approach utilizing SIPS. Use of 10″ SIPS for the walls. Implemented passive solar techniques. Structure solutions were direct and honest.” Read more about this project
Organized by the Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA), the award event is an annual occasion.
A timber frame home built using Insulspan panels, won a gold medal at the National Association of Home Builders 2008 Energy Value Housing Awards. The win came in the cold climate, custom design home category. The home’s design was by Riverbend Timber Framing and building was by Fireside Home Construction. The latter received accolades from the judges, who commented, “Fireside Homes appears to be doing everything it can (that is economically feasible) to design, build, and market an excellent home.”
Insulspan’s attention to detail proved instrumental in receiving the award. This includes site planning, a pre-construction energy analysis, and the construction process itself. The result was an exceptionally tight home, and a noteworthy HERS Index Score. View photos of this home.
Insulspan SIPS named a Top 10 Green Building Products of 2007 by the editors of Sustainable Industries. Companies received nominations by SI readers. Judging occurred using an independent panel of green building professionals. In the words of the judges of Sustainable Industries, “Not all SIPs are created equal, and Insulspan is the best.”
