Insulspan Product Featured on This Old House’s 25th Anniversary Project

This Old House

Insulspan Panels are set at the site.

This Old House, the PBS mainstay and home improvement program, chose Insulspan Structural Insulated Panels to rebuild a major portion of the Carlisle project. The project has been dubbed "the broadcast centerpiece" of This Old House's 25th Anniversary as it appeared on the broadcast program, in its magazine, on its website and more.

Beginning in May, expert craftsmen from This Old House – master carpenter Norm Abram, general contractor Tom Silva, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and landscape contractor Roger Cook – began transforming the dilapidated Greek Revival styled farmstead (pictured) into a modern home using Insulspan SIP technology.

Ready? Action!
On a hot and humid July 21, filming began on site for the SIP installation. Frank Baker, CEO of Insulspan and Jim Leroy, President of Insulspan distributor Panel Pros, Inc. arrived on-site to film segments of the panel installation process.

The producers, Deborah Hood and Bruce Irving, regularly go to great lengths in taking somewhat complicated information and simplifying it for the general audiences and viewers from master builders to soccer moms. This project was no exception!

Deborah and Bruce showed up with a basic plan of the various scenes they wanted to capture. Since the show is relaxed in its presentation style, a loose script was created. That script was then rehearsed and a practice run-through was filmed. Afterwards, the producers reviewed the film and made slight changes to the script. After a couple more test shots, the scene was completed and ready to go.

The next phase of filming was completed on August 18. By the time filming was finished, the producers had captured the panel construction, panels being set in place, panel connections, wiring installation, joint sealing, foaming and environmental issues relating to this type of construction.

The first segment of the Carlisle Project aired on October 7th. The first segment that Insulspan appeared in aired October 21 when Kevin O’Connor visited Jim Leroy and his crew as they set panels for another project in Concorde.
