Insulspan Homes are Healthier
INDOOR AIR QUALITY is becoming an increasingly
important aspect of new homes. Today's tighter homes can potentially
trap airborne pollutants, from annoying odors to molds, pollen and
bacteria. The U.S. EPA concluded that indoor air could be 5 times
more polluted than outdoor air.
The solution to reducing or even removing
indoor air pollution is a tight but well-ventilated house, with
the ventilation under your control. A fresh air exchanger expels
potentially stale, polluted indoor air and brings in fresh outdoor
air at a controlled rate. Some air exchangers available today incorporate
an air filter, constantly cleaning the indoor air via the return
air ducts as well as filtering out any contaminants in the outside
air before it is circulated through your home.
The American Lung Association recommends
sealed combustion air gas appliances for households with anyone
suffering from respiratory ailments such as asthma or allergies.
An added bonus, these units are typically more energy efficient
than standard models.
Mold growing in homes is a concern of
many homeowners. While there are no known toxic molds, there are
molds that produce micro toxins, which, in high enough concentrations,
can make someone with hypersensitivities ill. Basically, people
who are allergic to molds are most at risk with allergic reactions
to mold growing in their home.
The best defense we have against mold
in homes is to control moisture. Most moisture is released into
the home when cooking, bathing and doing laundry. Especially when
windows are closed, the moisture (which typically takes the form
of water vapor moving along air currents of the home) settles on
surfaces or escapes through 'leaks' in walls and ceilings. Kitchen
range hood and bathroom exhaust fans should be vented directly outside.
With an INSULSPAN SIP home's advanced
air sealing qualities (described in the Energy Efficiency section)
we greatly lessen the potential of mold growth. If air (and moisture
vapor) is not escaping into wall cavities and attics, we eliminate
mold growth in these areas.
QUIET! Loud distractions may be a thing
of the past when building with Insulspan SIPs. Due to their superior
insulation and air sealing, much of the unwanted clatter that goes
on outdoors cannot be heard inside the home.
Few things in life are as important to
our health as a good night's sleep. Having a home free from outside
noise not only betters our chances for rest, but the quiet promotes
concentration, reduces irritability and has been shown to have a
positive impact on our mental health.
According to a study published in the
Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, environmental
noise can impact the mental health of children. In the same study,
researchers found that environmental noise significantly impacted
students' academic performance, their social behavior and how easily
they became distracted.
Most sounds travel through the air. With
our INSULSPAN SIP walls and roofs plus tight-fitting doors and windows,
much of the annoying noise is blocked. Quiet appliances, bath fans
and furnaces can reduce ambient noise even further.
